Character Name: Abyss Pronounced: [uh-bis] anything profound, unfathomable, or infinite: the abyss of time. Gender: Mare Age: Three Rank: War Mare
Appearance: In a few words; agile, quick, lean muscle, scarred
Abyss might have made a pretty picture once but the years have not been kind to her. Scars mar her blood bay hide and twine around her black stockings. An odd list in her gait suggests an old injury that did not heal properly. An indent in her shoulder and a few chipped teeth are obvious reminders of battles fought and since she is still standing it is assumed she won. It's a good thing vanity is not one of her bigger traits since she certainly doesn't have the looks to pull it off.
Her base color is bay, though her color is not really comparable to any particular category of bay she is closest to blood bay. The tainted rouge of her hide seems too dark for a true blood bay but in the sun she cannot be mistaken for any other color. Her points, legs, mane, tail, ears and muzzle, are of the darkest ebony and are rarely tangled or matted. She has no other colors anywhere on her with the exception of a white tear drop shaped marking at the corner of her right eye.
Though she looks to be of Quarter Horse descent with her heavily muscled hips and shoulders along with a block like build, that blood has been diluted enough so that while she has the hips for easy breeding and foaling, she also has stronger legs then any pure Quarter Horse. This makes it easier for her to run distances, though she still cannot run as long as most other horses. Of course, in order to run faster she also has to be lighter; while her build is thicker than your average mustang she is far from the tank that Quarter Horses are usually compared too. Instead most of her muscle is lean, showing only when she uses it and not helping at all in close combat. For fighting her greatest advantage is speed, at least against other Warhorses, for if at any moment a stronger horse could get a hold of her she would be done for.
The thing that would hinder her the most should she try again to have a serious fight would be the old ankle injury that provides her signature limp. How she got this is a secret known only too her and if you wish to know you should take it up with Abyss, though I doubt she'll be inclined to share. For everyday purposes it does not bother her and it really only shows if she moves faster than a fast trot but if she tried to balance all of her weight on it like she used to it would surely snap like a twig. That is really the most serious of her injuries unless of course you count the scar that rests near her dock on the left side of her rump. A good chunk of flesh was ripped from her haunch at one point and it healed with a strange hairless indent. It is the one thing she is really vain about and you would do best not to mention it.
Every scar has a story, or so they say. If that's true then Abyss has thousands of stories to tell. Scars both small and large spiderweb across her hide, easily spotted in her short summer coat but covered almost completely by her shaggy winter coat. We already talked about her most noticeable one but there are a few others that should be pointed out as well. The ones on her legs are good to see, nasty white lines wrapping around and around like barbed wire. All she will say is she got those the same time she got her limp. Numerous others cover her, to name them all would take eternity.
Now that we have covered everything important it should be said that while Abyss is still young her body does not work nearly as well as it did when she first learned to fight.
Personality: In a few words; cunning, two-faced, proud, seductive, trust issues
Now that you have a rough sketch of her psyche you might better understand both her attitude and the more complicated insight soon to follow. Even as a young filly it is doubtful that Abyss was sweet and caring. It is simply not within her nature. Instead it is assumed that her already twisted mind was only further mangled by the war.
Abyss was bred more for intelligence then for brawn, the evidence rests in her smaller and lither build, and so where most Warhorses would rush into a fight at the slightest hint of aggression Abyss picks her battles carefully. That said she is not a coward, she simply makes herself scarce unless she believes she can win the fight. It is partly her pride that drives her to this for she cannot stand to lose, she would truly rather die.
